Safety

  • The UP mini 2 employs recirculating HEPA filtration with activated carbon. Due to recent scientific studies on ultra-fine particle and volatile organic compound emissions specifically associated with ABS and certain other materials used in 3D printing, some school boards in Canada and the USA are already including filtering as a requirement for 3D printer selection and usage. These compounds and particulates can be considered mucosal irritants for those suffering from asthma and allergies – difficult to discern among young students in the classroom setting. Proper filtration protects both the school and its students, ensuring a safe learning environment.
  • It is fully enclosed, keeping curious hands from heated elements and hot moving parts.
  • It features automatic shut down if the door is opened during a print job.
  • With a carrying handle and weighing only 8KG, the unit is easy to relocate for an individual meeting basic health standards.

Performance

  • The UP mini 2 uses a removable perf board print bed cover, promoting reliable first layer adhesion.
  • It prints well using PLA, ABS and other available filament materials.
  • Its full enclosure eliminates drafts and ensures the build chamber remains at a steady, warm temperature during printing, radically reducing warping issues commonly associated with open-air 3D printers. The enclosure also results in very quiet operation, mitigating noise pollution while students are working on other tasks.
  • “The UP 3D Printer line has always printed ABS better than most personal 3D printers and it is now improved... common ABS issues were completely overcome by the UP mini 2's perf board and enclosure.” – 3D Printer World, December, 2016.

The UP mini 2 is a perfect solution for today's STEM education needs in the K-12 classroom. It is a high performance, safe, affordable and flexible 3D printer unmatched in the marketplace when considering features versus alternative products. It is the right investment for today's schools with a focus on future requirements and long term viability. Compare the following five data points with all other 3D printer offerings and it quickly becomes clear, the competition simply doesn't compete.

Small Build Volume

  • 3D printing is time-consuming. Printing an 8” x 8” x 8” object could require over 20 hours. Taking advantage of a large build volume doesn't make sense in a classroom environment, because fewer projects can get done.
  • There are 3D printers with smaller build volumes, but at 12cm cubed, the UP mini 2 is relatively small.
  • Larger build volumes generally increase the price of a 3D printer.
  • If a school requires one or two units with big build volumes for special class project examples, the UP mini 2's larger sibling, the UP BOX+, includes the same safety features and print quality, but a larger build volume.

Ease-of-Use

  • UP 3D printers come with UP Studio, award-winning software renowned for its simplicity and usability.
  • UP Studio is derived from Tiertime's 14 years of industrial 3D printer system development.
  • Open source-based software such as Cura, Repetier Host, MatterControl and Simplify3D are multi-purpose in nature, intended for the control of many different types of 3D printers. They suffer from the axiom, “jack of all trades, master of none.” UP Studio is designed only for UP 3D printers. It does not need to include a wide array of confusing settings and options necessary to adjust for three hundred different machines from a hundred different manufacturers. As a result, UP Studio not only performs better, it is much easier for instructors to teach, allowing students to focus on creating and printing, not on printer software.

Price

  • At Education Price RM2,999, the UP mini 2 is one of the most affordable 3D printers available today. No other 3D printers in its price range, or even double the price, match its safety features and print quality.
  • A school board can purchase two UP mini 2s for less than one LulzBot Mini, MakerBot Replicator Mini+ or Ultimaker 2 Go. None of these competing 3D printers include air filtration and a full enclosure.
  • The Cubicon Single Plus is fully enclosed and has air filtration, but costs 4.8 times as much as the UP mini 2 and 1.5 times as much as the UP mini 2's larger sibling, the UP BOX+, intended for the professional engineering market.
  • A district can purchase 40 units of UP mini 2s for RM119,960. 40 units of MakerBot Replicator+ would cost RM491,972 and would not include full enclosures and air filtration.
  • 10 inexpensive UP mini 2s are far more productive than two expensive, large 3D printers, because ten print head are operating instead of just two.
